Re: Fly and Levitate

on topic though: the easiest way to do this would be to make the spell allow using the Magic stat in place of Skill. this way the spell itself merely makes the caster as competent as a Skilled character and grant no actual skill points in climb Yep that'd work well. I'd want them to not be the best...

Re: combat modifier for flight

In the same way as the -2 for "Drunk" is on whoever's drunk, the -5 for "Airborne" is going to be on whoever's airborne, otherwise it'd be something like "Vs airborne opponent". But this one has the note "Applied to both mounted attacker and unmounted foe", so I'd take it as being for if the PCs get...

Re: what do you give Luck for?

I've pretty much followed what it says in the rulebook about them being for "making fortunate choices, discovering key quest items" or helping "another character who will be important later on". So for example in my Eye of the Serpent adaption I awarded them for: Finding a treasure that was small an...

Re: Alternative Luck tests

I think using Luck+Adv. Skill occassionally could be an occasional middle way. RAW, there are a lot of uses of Luck that could be tied to Skill, depending on how you look at it - avoiding to fall into a trapdoor opening beneath your feet might be based on Luck, or it might be based on your Awarenes...

Re: Alternative Luck tests

However, there are a lot of classic "saving throw" cases where Luck is the main thing, but some expertise might reasonably help. I think I'll just try it out for a session or two and see what it does to the game. I look at it like this. D&D saving throws are all based on level, which is based on ex...

Re: Alternative Luck tests

I haven't tried the alternative unopposed test rules (in the optional rules on page 156 for anyone wondering) that make them roll over, not roll under. I'm happy to take Jakob's word for it that 14 works better as the base target number than 15. What I'll add is it makes no sense to try to include e...

Re: Converting Exile to AFF

This is the computer game? It looks a lot like the Ultima games, which I played a few of back in the day. Of course the look isn't what's important when converting to a pen and paper RPG.

Re: Does anyone use AFF for other settings?

While most of the published scenarios seem to be fight-heavy (though I don't know that many), AFF2s skill system is really very robust, and there's a lot you can do in terms of rules without having to fight (it's different, in that regard, from most versions of D&D, where you really miss out on mos...

Re: Newbee question

Is it correct that no matter how many attacks are made, each combatant only rolls one combat total per round, and that this total is also used as defense value against attacks by multiple opponents? So if you roll well, you defend well against all attackers, including the ones shooting at you? I pl...

Re: Questions about priestly spell Ward

Yep that works fine. Quarter of a metre radius per Devotion is probably easier to work with than adding up cm though. Good idea to say that at minimum it covers the caster. If both duration and area are set by Devotion then range can be 0 with it centred on the casters location. I'm still not sure i...

Ah yeah, he's done this other years too. Last time I picked up all the Atlantis and Jonathan Hicks scenario PDFs. There's also a mention of AFF freebies there and who doesn't like freebies?

Here's the link for anyone interested:

Re: New AFF rulebook, upgrade or replacement?

Yeah if I were you I might wait for the new one for the print book, but it could be ages so I'd go ahead on the PDF first. Even if they don't change the text at all (Graham please do make some changes ;) the completely new layout and presentation still sounds like a sizeable project. If you get the ...

Re: What Would Conan Do? blog

Only read the first one about Luck so far, but the ideas about how to get Luck points back are interesting. He's right you don't want players hassling the GM to award them Luck for things they did. You could maybe boil down his suggestions to decide on a system for giving back Luck and then stick to...
