We use Awareness all the time, every time the heroes might notice something we roll and we use it for Initiative skill+awareness+2d6. But that is a good idea if it gave a bonus to your awareness roll.

I don't know if anyone else has hit upon this idea, but I was considering using the rank in a combat Special Skill as a multiplier for damage rolled. For example, Bob the Barbarian has 4 ranks in Brawling. He is using a dagger to attack a monster. If successful, he is able to do 4x whatever is roll...
