Re: Simplified magic system similar to Luck -- your thoughts?

I should also add that this is not meant for a long-term campaign. Mostly just one-shot adventures.

Simplified magic system similar to Luck -- your thoughts?

I'm interested in creating a simple, easy-to-understand way to handle magic for younger players, or for adults entirely new to gaming. For example, if you're meeting people for the first time and running an introductory RPG. Here goes: In this simplified system, Magic works like Luck. When you want ...

Super-quick adventure formula

If you want to create a quick adventure with a variety of encounters, but you're feeling stuck in a rut, here's the formula I use: * 3 combat encounters: an easy one, a medium-difficulty one, and a climactic "boss" battle at the end * Obstacle encounter: something that physically blocks the heroes' ...

Re: Other Settings

I don't know if this counts, but one time I did an adventure for 1920s archaeologists vs. Lovecraftian baddies. I used weird monsters right out of the book, and I think we said that firearms did 1d6 damage. (Funny enough, though, one of the heroes spent most combats hitting things with a shovel.) Wo...

Re: Run away!

Morale is just a SKILL test for the bad guys. With a few modifiers. :)

Re: Run away!

We had a recent case where a bunch of sewer goblins popped out of a manhole and rushed the party. The lead character drew her sword and with a single swipe, completely obliterated the first goblin. Everybody stopped and said, "Whoa!" So I decided it was time to roll for morale. When someone does som...

Re: Stellar Adventures

Right now, I'm lending a hand with editing the finished chapters, and everything is going smoothly. There is a ton of material in there, but it's not cumbersome. It really nails the tone of Fighting Fantasy: simple and straightforward, full of possibilities, and fun. Because it's sort of an open too...

Re: Do any of you still play AFF 1E (Dungeoneer) ?

Honestly, I think reprinting the original basic Fighting Fantasy: the Introductory Role-Playing Game would be a stroke of genius.

Put that thing up as a PDF, and promote it as the perfect way to introduce anyone to RPGs. It would practically be a public service. :)

Re: Do any of you still play AFF 1E (Dungeoneer) ?

GreatArc, if you're truly looking for a super-simple, old-school RPG that can be taught in five minutes, go get a copy of the original Fighting Fantasy book. Not Dungeoneer. I'm talking about the one with the unfortunate illustration of the tiger-man on the cover: https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Fan...

Re: Quick and dirty skirmish battle rules

Neat. Isn't that basically how the big battles work, though? Sort of. The Heroes Companion goes into more detail about casualties, so that you can scale a battle up or down, having dozens or hundreds of soldiers in a unit. In this case, I made the troops and STAMINA a one-for-one ratio. So it only ...

Quick and dirty skirmish battle rules

For the climax of a recent adventure, my Fighting Fantasy group unexpectedly decided to raise an army to fight the big bad guy. Very exciting, but there was some confusion when I went to break out the big battle rules -- there was a little bit of pushback to the tune of "I have to learn something ne...

Loads of useful d6 tables for random NPCs, settings, magic, etc.

I just discovered a pay-what-you-want RPG that’s basically a dozen pages of random goodness. All sorts of handy d6 x d6 tables. The game system itself is forgettable (and oddly FF-ish), but the tables are a gold mine for any GM. It’s called Maze Rats: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/197158/Maze-...

Re: Random Hero Creation Table

Here's a revised version of the table with a quarter of characters having some magic. (They're all clustered at the beginning of the table, 11 - 23, so if you don't want a magic character, it's easy to roll again.) 11 = SKILL 5, STAMINA 8, LUCK 8, MAGIC 7 12 = SKILL 5, STAMINA 8, LUCK 9, MAGIC 6 13 ...

Re: Random Hero Creation Table

You know, that was my initial thought too. But when I looked at the sample characters in the AFF rulebook, nearly half of them had a Magic score. Hmm.
