Re: Fun creature features, tricks and habits?

i use gremlins as a "Tuckers kobolds" kind of enemy. they are very short compared to all playable races and i give them all magic-wizardry with natural mage. makes sense to me because they are highly intelligent and malicious and cruel. using spells which allow tests of luck (or dodge) they can drai...

Re: Assassins of Allansia Gamebook

maybe the younger readers are kids of the original readers?
books always been on the shelf, until they reach a certain age.
my son has played all manner of games which are essentially better versions of the ones i played as a kid/young adult.

it's cool either way

Re: Assassins of Allansia Gamebook

i suspect the bounce back is because those who enjoyed them as kids/young adults are now money earners. plus some people grew up doing stuff they loved and now have the capacity to steer those markets, directly or indirectly. seen the recent Heroquest re-emergence? great example but i doubt it would...

Re: Danger Scale for Monsters

in original dungeoneer monsters with multiple Attacks don't take outnumbering penalties until all of their Attacks are used and there are still enemies left over. i think this makes sense and still use that rule. i also roll for each attack separately rather than one roll, otherwise a single Fumble ...

Re: Question about Priestly Magic

my sandbox had lots of mini adventures in place and they restored all Luck upon completion of any of them. the issue i hadn't considered was running around the map finding said adventures but then deciding to continue exploring loads more without actually engaging in any of them. between that and pr...

Re: Question about Priestly Magic

it would be a massive issue in my game, my group regularly use their Luck as essentially additional Armour points (by testing when taking a big hit and getting a 7 for their armour roll) but that's because i've been running a sandbox style game. if they don't go to specific places they encounter no ...

combat modifier for flight

i notice in the combat modifier table that fighting a flying opponent causes a -5 to your total that's pretty steep my party were seriously threatened by harpies in our last session and they are intended to be scavengers in the adventure and not a credible threat what gives with this? also means ene...

Re: Fly and Levitate

holy thread necromancy bat man!! on topic though: the easiest way to do this would be to make the spell allow using the Magic stat in place of Skill. this way the spell itself merely makes the caster as competent as a Skilled character and grant no actual skill points in climb. a similar approach wo...

Re: My homebrew - Weird Spells

a combination of spells that would be interesting is one that does not allow a Luck Test (say Force bolt) with one that does allow one (like Fear) then if someone fails they take damage and flee, but if someone passes they just take the damage. some combinations would make no sense to be very expens...

Re: My homebrew - Weird Spells

really if the spell is identical to an existing spell in effect it should just cost the same. i like the idea of variant spells that look different but are mechanically the same, however i think this is more useful for NPC's or baddies because it circumvents player knowledge to an extent. actually i...

Re: what do you give Luck for?

Quite like the ambition thing actually! currently they are going to gain Luck for meeting certain NPC's who help them in various ways, they can potentially make the adventure easier too. which makes me feel a bit like they're getting a double reward, especially as the help in some cases is especiall...

what do you give Luck for?

i'm writing an adventure but i don't normally do linear adventures, typically i play a sandbox style game, which my players are struggling to get on with. so i'm wondering what you guys all give Luck points for? i only have two adventure books to read for inspiration: crown of kings and warlock of f...

Re: Newbee question

i use additional rolls for each attack, it stops the poor roll killing a character or a great roll meaning it is impossible to harm for that one round. if someone is fighting defensively i tend to allow them to use their usual weapons as normal. if their dodge is higher it makes sense to allow them ...
