Re: Looking at The SKILL 12 problem with new eyes

Funnily enough I had the same thing playing co-operative Icewind Dale. I was the cleric, some of the earlier big dungeons are undead focused so I was cleaning up and very much the biggest deal in the party. Then a dungeon or two later we were up against giants (iirc) and the barbarian was the only t...

Re: Looking at The SKILL 12 problem with new eyes

I think it pretty much boils down to that as well, yah. There's still interesting choices to be made and roleplay, puzzles and traps. And yet even with combat greater SKILL just means greater challenges. So what if a single orc isn't a threat anymore? Throw a dozen at them, at once, and some archers...

Re: Allansian Sorcery

Clash of Princes springs to mind. The Warlock's Way uses a MAGIC attribute as a fourth statistic, casting spells comes from there instead of from your STAMINA. The spells are described as Battle Spells and the list includes: WEAKEN, CLUMSY, DEATH BLAST, ZAP, SLEEP, BEFUDDLE, NIMBLE, STRENGTH, EMPOWE...

Re: Missile Combat

That's the part I was most interested in (It's BC, or CB depending on who got the highest result even though they both succeeded). :D Unless you mean both succeed but they also both roll the exact same result... in which case we're back to having to adjudicate a draw but that can't really be helped....

Re: Missile Combat

We use the alternate "roll high" skill checks from p.156, which have an extra quirk in this situation. It could be looked at as: Since rolling high is required to succeed, and rolling higher than your opponent is required to win it's entirely possible to beat your opponent but not have a high enough...

Re: Missile Combat

I'd been overlooking it, certainly. I vaguely remember letting someone do an opposed roll with Dodge, once, but maybe that's wishful thinking. Though I'd definitely argue that missile attacks as an opposed roll only applies for an alerted opponent. The target don't have to necessarily be aware they'...

Re: Medusa

I forgot about Counterspell, whoops. Medusa Grass sounds like the actual answer though. You can always add some ready-prepared as loot/treasure they find in the next room or so? Maybe a bundle of it is in a locked puzzlebox in a room nearby. put there by the dungeon creators. Or perhaps they find po...

Re: Medusa

Might be missing it as well, but I can't seem to find a canonical way. Some ideas you might or might not want to use: -wear off naturally, say after a day -wears off when the medusa is killed, either instantly or after a time (say, the next morning) -a priest casting heal, remove disease, or remove ...

Re: Counterspell

It reminds me a little of how missile attacks work. Typically an archer shooting at a target is a roll to hit with modifiers. Yet if two archers shoot at each other it's an opposed roll to see which of them gets hit. Maybe the same applies to spells? If two spellcasters try to loose spells on each o...

Re: Combat Companion

Where should I be watching for news that this is available? Will there be an announcement on the forums when it launches?

Re: Group rolls?

That's fantastic! Definitely going to start using that idea for when "do nothing" isn't quite so easy. Love those examples too, makes total sense. :D I do think it's a good idea to be flexible with what special skills can be applied, like you say. Though maybe I should remind the players more often ...

Re: Group rolls?

I like the sound of that way of adding the assist bonuses! It fits in much more smoothly with the existing AFF rules as well since it's very similar to outnumbering where additional people add a flat bonus. Also definitely this is only for situations where they're genuinely working together on a tas...

Group rolls?

Is there a standard way to handle something like this? For example: If two people in the party have Awareness and both want to look for something together then they both roll, that's two individual chances to spot something. If either or both pass, they spot the thing. Easy enough. But they're not r...

Re: Spell Cards

Looks great! Nice and clear and easy to read from what I can see. Only other thing I thought of was maybe you could put the spell name in big letters on the dragon's fire of the cardback so you can find the right card no matter which side is currently up? I don't know if the card generator lets you ...

Re: Combat Companion

Woo!

That all looks extremely appealing. Very much looking forward to it!
Especially with an unarmed-focused fighter in my current group... and a mage that likes fighting... and with them all wanting to buy horses soon...

I'd offer to proof-read but sadly no professional experience at it. :P
