Re: Money, a new approach

I like the approach of 100 coins = 1 point of encumbrance but don’t question your calculations. To keep the simplicity it could just be changed to something like 500 coins/gems to an item. But with real world coin sizes, AFF2 treasure quantities, and everyone in the party carrying a part of what's ...

Re: Money, a new approach

After most coins being silver, the next best way to add some real world is not all coins being the same size. Coins were worth the precious metal in them, so a silver shilling worth twelve silver pennies was twelve times the size of a penny. Here's some typical historical coin weights: gold sovereig...

Re: Money, a new approach

I like that, and for the names we can go even further. Instead of using a Crown you could call it a Groat (or Groschen if you want German or Grosso for Italian) which comes from denaro grosso or big penny apparently. This does have the nice side affect that you can put g as a short hand which is no...

Re: Money, a new approach

Sure, I wasn't meaning to hold you responsible for copper coins in RPGs :) Each coin denomination being a different metal is a well worn RPG convention. I'll point the finger at D&D, if it didn't invent that it certainly popularised it. But it's convenient and I've used copper coins myself, as I tal...

Re: Money, a new approach

If Adventurers find money it will almost always be in the form of cp. This means that if they find 3Gp of treasure (a lot under these rules!) then that will be 600cp which they need to carry around. Keeping in mind that each 100 coins counts as an item they’ll start to get loaded up fast! :-). Thro...

Re: Armour

In this discussion about criticals, drbargle and Eddie were talking about the Armour Special Skill and how Stellar Adventures doesn't add it to SKILL deciding what you can use. I clicked that would go nicely with what I did previously in this thread about armour. The idea had been to make it worthwh...

Re: Danger Scale for Monsters

Many of us feel that the monsters in Out of the Pit (and the subsequent books) are a little underpowered when faced with a *party* of Adventuring Heroes. I've been on about this one so much Graham's probably got tired of hearing about it. :) For me it's more about the SKILL mismatch against the Pit...

Re: Question about Priestly Magic

my sandbox had lots of mini adventures in place and they restored all Luck upon completion of any of them. Right, that seems like it should be a fair way to do it and it's in the spirit of what it says in the rulebook. That wasn't written with a wilderness sandbox in mind so it's an interesting que...

Re: Question about Priestly Magic

it would be a massive issue in my game, my group regularly use their Luck as essentially additional Armour points (by testing when taking a big hit and getting a 7 for their armour roll) but that's because i've been running a sandbox style game. The rulebook says voluntary LUCK tests can be used to...

Re: Question about Priestly Magic

Some more ideas on this. I remember that Graham's said somewhere before that points lost from current LUCK are a bigger penalty than they might seem, because it isn't regained per day, only per adventure. I think that's true, but it is dependent on how much the Director asks the PCs to test their lu...

Re: Question about Priestly Magic

Anywhere the rulebook just says "deduct a LUCK point" I believe it means from current LUCK. But I think I can see where you're coming from, that seems like a pretty light penalty for something that should only happen "in dire circumstances". You could look at it that an adventuring priest really is ...

Re: Fly and Levitate

on topic though: the easiest way to do this would be to make the spell allow using the Magic stat in place of Skill. this way the spell itself merely makes the caster as competent as a Skilled character and grant no actual skill points in climb Yep that'd work well. I'd want them to not be the best...

Re: combat modifier for flight

In the same way as the -2 for "Drunk" is on whoever's drunk, the -5 for "Airborne" is going to be on whoever's airborne, otherwise it'd be something like "Vs airborne opponent". But this one has the note "Applied to both mounted attacker and unmounted foe", so I'd take it as being for if the PCs get...

Re: what do you give Luck for?

I've pretty much followed what it says in the rulebook about them being for "making fortunate choices, discovering key quest items" or helping "another character who will be important later on". So for example in my Eye of the Serpent adaption I awarded them for: Finding a treasure that was small an...

Re: Alternative Luck tests

I think using Luck+Adv. Skill occassionally could be an occasional middle way. RAW, there are a lot of uses of Luck that could be tied to Skill, depending on how you look at it - avoiding to fall into a trapdoor opening beneath your feet might be based on Luck, or it might be based on your Awarenes...
