Re: Low magic AFF2 rules part 1: PCs have no magic, but NPCs do

Okay here's another idea. It's maybe surprising that it's no harder to cast a 6 point spell than a 1 point spell. A negative modifier could be applied to the spellcasting roll of half the rank of the spell, rounded down. So 1 point spells would have no modifier, 2 point spells -1, 4 point spells -2 ...

Re: Low magic AFF2 rules part 1: PCs have no magic, but NPCs do

Page 33. "A Hero with Magic-Wizardry knows total spell levels equal to double the total of MAGIC and Magic-Wizardry. No spells above level 4 may be chosen at this stage". Thanks for clarifying, I was looking in the wrong place. It also tallies with the sample characters but it sure is a lot of spel...

Re: Low magic AFF2 rules part 3: No "Big" spells

I realised of the low magic threads this is the one I end up liking. Numbers 2 and 4 would make for interesting campaigns but it wouldn't really be canon Titan any more. Which is fine if that's what you're looking for of course. Number 1 has sort of morphed into this one anyway because straight out ...

Re: Low magic AFF2 rules part 1: PCs have no magic, but NPCs do

The prob with any restrictions not also on NPCs is it's going to seem unfair to the players. "If that NPC can cast those spells how come there's no way any of us can learn to?" You can restrict what they start being able to do, and you can make it hard as you like to learn to cast new spells, but if...

Re: Priests as opponents

That's true of course, and the high priest in question has a bodyguard in tow as well as being in a temple full of followers. But that doesn't really change that a basic priest has a fair bit of magic to call on while a high priest has... pretty much the same. I expect the first thing most adventure...

Re: Low magic AFF2 rules part 2: No flashy magic

I suspect if there was no damage causing magic the end result might be players who wanted to use magic always choosing wizard/warriors rather than dedicated wizards. The problem is if you had a full on wizard under those rules you'd have nothing much to do every time there was a fight, which would g...

Priests as opponents

Priests get all their magic at the start and then don't get any more except possibly via talents. You can say the same about sorcerers but they can increase how often they can use their magic through their advances. I've heard the arguments that priests have other uses in a party than magic but I go...

Re: Low magic AFF2 rules part 1: PCs have no magic, but NPCs

My impression from the gamebooks and the Titan book isn't far off this. With the notable exception of the Sorcery books it wasn't that common for you to be a spellcaster, although sometimes like in Scorpion Swamp you started with items that sort of made you one. AFF2 the way I'd guess many people ar...

Re: Extended treasure tables

I would like to see things like this uploaded to the "download" section of the Arion Games website... There's probably a few things floating around that could be added there. I'm happy for this to be if Graham is. One thing I'd like to add in future is a table for each type of magical item (Compone...

Extended treasure tables

I've managed to finish up one of my AFF projects, hopefully this will be useful to people. AFF2 Treasure 2.1 I'm going to head off one possible question. It might look like there's too many numbers on things that should be kind of unlikely. Apparently with 4d6 the high and low numbers tend to cancel...

Re: No magic AFF rules

I hadn't thought about it before but it's true, AFF wouldn't be completely unbalanced by not always having a "healer" along. Maybe because in the gamebooks you were mostly by yourself so it had to be able to work that way? Anyway, no magic is certainly workable in AFF and might make for an interesti...

Re: A simpler way to power up spells

Great idea but I'm not sure about the costs. A fixed 2 extra points is too much for 1 point spells and it would be good to power up some of those too. Befuddle for example, the 1 minute duration isn't enough depending what you're trying to do. I'm wondering about half the base cost of the spell roun...

Re: Casting spells while hands are bound?

That's a good way to go. It's a bit of a limitation on their power and also some nice flavour to have them waving hands and saying arcane phrases. Although some might be a bit more theatrical about it than they need to be... You might rule that for cantrips mumbling under your breath (or through a g...

Re: Luck scores for monsters

I'd consider each spell case by case but magic resistance might not be the best way to think of it. With a damage causing spell you can see coming like Firebolt I'd think it was more about reactions and throwing yourself out the way. Those usually say characters can use Dodge or Luck. So slow creatu...

Nice idea with the Unholy Howl. They think they have it all under control and then suddenly they're up to their a%*es in the undead. Not to mention cut off from the way out...
