Re: Actual play report: The Citadel Of Chaos - AFF2-style

I'm going through the old posts. Any chance of a Citadel of Choas or other FF conversion any time?

Raising zombies vs raising skeletons

So, here is a question I have about raising corpses. Surely, a necromancer doesn't have a choice whether the corpse is a skeleton or a zombie when they raise it? Surely if it still has a certain amount of flesh left, it's a zombie and if the flesh has all rotted away, then it's a skeleton. Whilst, y...

Re: Junk and its uses

One issue I can see is that, in a gamebook, the paths and choices are more tightly restricted than in a ttRPG, so the 'junk' you find at the start of the adventure will almost certainly be useful (or a nasty trap) later in the adventure. Now, you can replicate this is a ttRPG, but getting in the ha...

Junk and its uses

I think the idea of collecting junk that happens to be super useful later on is a common trope in a lot of Fighting Fantasy books (especially ones by Ian Livingstone) and I like the idea of having characters who start off with almost nothing - either as peasants, beggars, heroes who have been robbed...

Re: Shadow magic - new magical style

Hi all! Many thanks for your feedback! I originally got the idea from a unit from the game Battle for Wesnoth . Shadowmages are rogue mages who learn dark magic to help them survive. They aren't particularly evil, but just use evil magic. I ran with that as a tool because I remember the bad guys get...

Re: Tweaks and clarifications to the new AFF rulebook

The only tweak I would consider right now would be the Sorcery Magic. The Sorcery series didn't exactly give players every spell in the book. Players had to memorize spell codes then use them at the right time but they were confronted with a list of other spell codes, some real some not, to confuse...

Re: Tweaks and clarifications to the new AFF rulebook

Adjust the Natural Mage Talent I agree that it misses out on all the tension/danger/fun if you can never get a critical fail when you cast spells that cost 1. How would you change it? The focus talent gives a bonus to rolls and the arcane talent reduces the chance of an Oops! Table, both I think ar...

Re: Tweaks and clarifications to the new AFF rulebook

lowering base skill to 4 and then maxing a special skill to 2 means you need to roll a 6 or less to be successful. meaning you lose the "start competent and improve from there" which i love about AFF. back to D&D style "rubbish when you start" level grinding and fighting giant rats to make some XP ...

Re: Tweaks and clarifications to the new AFF rulebook

It would be good to sort out claw sizes and which creatures have which claw sizes- the demon book has 4 different claw sizes and the old book had different sizes to this one.

I can't see how much xp it costs to learn a battle magic spell. Anyone know how much it costs?

Re: How about reducing the number of magical styles?

@SkinnyOrc - yes, I know! I did this because I was going through the shadowcaster spells and adding a load of core book spells and thinking why not just do it the other way round? @Eddie - that would reduce the number of magical styles even more. It could work. Spells would need more stats like time...

How about reducing the number of magical styles?

This may be a controversial topic, but I'll bring it up in the interests of streamlining the rules. There are a lot of magical styles that follow the same pattern as Magic - Wizardy. They get you magic points and you roll two dice to see if you cast the spell and you have an Oops! table if you get a...

Shadow magic - new magical style

Hi all! Here's a new magical style. If you want this in a word document, its in https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw3nCQKxLG5_dUZ2MFVzd2p3X28 . Shadowcasters Shadowcsters are a type of wizard whose magic specialises in the use of light. Their spells are usually shadow themed which either involves re...
