Re: My homebrew - Weird Spells

a combination of spells that would be interesting is one that does not allow a Luck Test (say Force bolt) with one that does allow one (like Fear) then if someone fails they take damage and flee, but if someone passes they just take the damage. some combinations would make no sense to be very expens...

Re: My homebrew - Weird Spells

really if the spell is identical to an existing spell in effect it should just cost the same. i like the idea of variant spells that look different but are mechanically the same, however i think this is more useful for NPC's or baddies because it circumvents player knowledge to an extent. actually i...

Re: what do you give Luck for?

Quite like the ambition thing actually! currently they are going to gain Luck for meeting certain NPC's who help them in various ways, they can potentially make the adventure easier too. which makes me feel a bit like they're getting a double reward, especially as the help in some cases is especiall...

what do you give Luck for?

i'm writing an adventure but i don't normally do linear adventures, typically i play a sandbox style game, which my players are struggling to get on with. so i'm wondering what you guys all give Luck points for? i only have two adventure books to read for inspiration: crown of kings and warlock of f...

Re: Newbee question

i use additional rolls for each attack, it stops the poor roll killing a character or a great roll meaning it is impossible to harm for that one round. if someone is fighting defensively i tend to allow them to use their usual weapons as normal. if their dodge is higher it makes sense to allow them ...

Re: Questions about priestly spell Ward

i love the idea of a priest just wandering around making Warded areas that are permanent!! If not specified I would assume it isn't permanent, although I don't think it would be especially overpowered as such. Thinking about it the temples of Good gods would likely be warded against evil entities an...

Re: New Talent: Martial Artist

you could model it as working mechanically like an additional magical form. the names would change into stances, movements, defences etc, the magic points could by Chi or Psi points which get spent to use the abilities. if you were going to go that way i would look towards the 4th edition D&D monk f...

Re: Junk and its uses

in agreement with drbargle, in addition in a dungeon you can typically retrace your steps in a ttRPG but not in a CYOA book.

I like the idea in general principle, will try to put some stuff in my own adventures in future, I like it as homage to where the game(s) came from.

Re: How about reducing the number of magical styles?

good points all SkinnyOrc. i always tend to approach these things as thought it'd be used by a player, but the background of AFF and style of play (The players ARE heroes after all) suggests this isn't necessary. I have done some work on Elementalist Magics on Saturday, more than planned because my ...

Re: How about reducing the number of magical styles?

If i were going to make necromancy a base style of magic i would make a lot of shorter duration summoning spells at the lower levels. Raise Skeleton takes ages, but creates a permanent creature under your control (permanent until destroyed anyway) so a starting necromancer would need shorter summons...

Re: Shadow magic - new magical style

am wondering if the inspiration is from Steven Erikson's excellent books the Malazan books of the Fallen? like the idea behind the shadow caster idea in any case. Eclipse in particular seems like a minor villain spell: cast repeatedly upon a field it would prevent crops growing unless paid an amount...

Re: How about reducing the number of magical styles?

possibly the way to make it work would be slightly more complicated remove the "must have magic-wizardry of X to pursue this route" which some of them have. this way the golem builder isn't also a high level wizard, he might only be good at making golems or whatever, and a rubbish spell caster. it a...

Re: Tweaks and clarifications to the new AFF rulebook

lowering base skill to 4 and then maxing a special skill to 2 means you need to roll a 6 or less to be successful. meaning you lose the "start competent and improve from there" which i love about AFF. back to D&D style "rubbish when you start" level grinding and fighting giant rats to make some XP u...

Re: How about reducing the number of magical styles?

i like the idea, i have felt the sheer number of magical disciplines is somewhat excessive for a player. then again, the background of Titan has mega high level magic users, which would certainly be able to "max out" more than one type. except the ones which make you lose your previous spells (necro...

Re: Tweaks and clarifications to the new AFF rulebook

The trainer thing is key for delaying advancement. the way i see it is 1 point is "yeah i've used a sword and practiced with it" 2 is "i use this for a living, my life literally depends on it" so 3 might be "best in the city or country (depending)" and the higher levels? much harder. actually with S...
