Alternative Fumble Table

Post by Laurence » Thu Sep 29, 2016 1:38 am

I posted this earlier in the Stellar Adventures forum, but I'm reposting it here in case anyone finds it useful.

This is the home-made fumble table I use in my AFF games. Some of the results are more story based, and not every result will work for every situation. But it often adds some memorable moments to a battle.

Roll two dice and read them as a two-digit number, 11 through 66.

ALTERNATIVE FUMBLE TABLE

11 Your weapon breaks! (If magic, it’s now in the hands of the enemy.)
12 Surprise blow! Take 1d3 damage from an unexpected source.
13 Behind you! Foe’s next attack is at +3.
14 Cornered! Foe’s next attack is at +2.
15 Knocked out! Out of the battle for 1d3 rounds.
16 Weapon knocked from your hand! Reduce your skill by two points. On your next successful attack, instead of harming your foe, you can retrieve your weapon.

21 Knocked back! Over a ledge, into the water, into an unseen pit, etc. (If that's impossible, you get knocked into a wall, tree, etc.) Test Your Luck to catch yourself, or lose one die of Stamina on impact.
22 Foe strikes a crippling blow! Normal damage, and you lose 1 Skill until healed.
23 Stroke of bad luck! Lose 1 Luck.
24 Unsteady footing! You slip, off-balance. -2 to rolls for one turn.
25 Weapon breaks! Or runs out of ammo. (Enchanted weapon temporarily loses power.)
26 Fall down! -3 to rolls while getting up next round.

31 Foe strikes vicious blow! You take double damage.
32 Foe stuns you! Take damage, -3 to your next roll.
33 Smash! The nearest fragile object breaks.
34 New scenery obstacle appears! -2 to rolls unless removed.
35 Ground/floor gives away! You drop into whatever lies below. Test Your Luck to catch yourself, or lose one die of Stamina on impact.
36 Errant strike! Hit the nearest ally (if no allies, hit self) for normal damage.

41 Collateral damage!. You accidentally damage the most valuable object nearby.
42 Something catches on fire!
43 An item of your equipment is destroyed or lost.
44 A piece of armor is damaged or destroyed (lose 1 point across).
45 The situation suddenly gets worse: darkness, rain, rockslide, slippery floor, etc. -2 to rolls until fixed.
46 Enemy reinforcements! One or two fresh new foes appear.

51 Foe enraged with bloodlust! Regains 1d3 Stamina.
52 Foe rallies! With a surge of morale, foe hits you twice. (Roll separately.)
53 Merely stunned! Previously defeated foe rises with 1d6 new Stamina and attacks you.
54 Alarm! An enemy sounds the alarm, which will soon summon reinforcements. Up to 3 more will arrive in 1d6 turns.
55 It’s YOU! You recognize this foe as an old enemy: add 1d3 to enemy’s Skill and Stamina.
56 Look out! Foe unleashes an unexpected new ability, enchanted artifact, or spell.

61 Foe gets lucky strike, hits both you and nearest ally.
62 Foe strikes weak spot. No armor roll (if no armor, +2 to damage roll)
63 The battle disturbs a random unrelated creature/foe, which immediately attacks you.
64 Driven back! You may only defend next round, not attack.
65 Lose your grip. Weapon goes flying, cannot be retrieved until after the battle.
66 Lucky accident. Miss intended target, but hit a random other foe for normal damage.

Good stuff! Having to sometimes fit what you get to the current situation seems like a small price to pay for having more interesting results in the table.

Same
He just sits there tapping away all day on a tiny screen. But he tells everyone that he is slaying Orcs.

Thanks! Glad you like it.

I used to look at fumbles as a way of saying, “Oops! Your character fouled up.”

These days, I think it's more fun to say, “Oops! Something bad happened and now things are more dangerous and difficult -- and therefore more fun.” ;)

Any chance you'd put together something similar for criticals? Even though they don't have a table in the book it could work the same way.

Challenge accepted! :)

I made up a new table for critical hit rolls. Bear in mind that I haven't playtested this table yet. So if you try it, or if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

ALTERNATIVE CRITICAL HIT TABLE

You hit your opponent for normal damage AND gain a random effect.

Roll two dice and read them as a two-digit number between 11 and 66:

11 Fast follow-up blow! Roll damage again.
12 You also hit an adjacent foe.
13 You turn foe’s attack back on himself for normal damage.
14 Vicious blow! Your attack does double damage.
15 Strike a weak spot. Ignore armor and add +2 to your damage roll.
16 Combo hit! Strike your foe again for extra 1d3 damage, then get +1 on your next attack.

21 You swing or jump off the scenery (or large foe). +3 to your next attack.
22 After hitting your foe, you duck around the scenery and get a free hit on a different foe.
23 You send scenery crashing down onto your foe, causing 1d6 damage.
24 You use the scenery as cover. -3 to foe’s next attack.
25 Drive foe back over a ledge, into the water or a pit, or into the scenery for 1d6 damage.
26 Ground/floor gives away beneath foe, dropping them away into whatever lies below.

31 Team up! One ally of your choice gets a free hit on their foe.
32 Your blow sends your foe reeling. Ally of your choice gets a free hit.
33 Over here! You also hit a foe who is fighting an ally.
34 Higher ground! You gain a terrain advantage. Add +1 SKILL as long as you stay there.
35 Maneuver behind your foe. +3 to your next attack.
36 Unexpected aid! An old ally or random monster joins the fight, attacking your foe. (Then runs off after the battle.)

41 Your ferocity terrifies your foe, who must test SKILL or flee.
42 Coward! The foe furthest away from you drops his weapon and flees, or loses 3 SKILL.
43 You duck, and your foe hits nearest other foe (or self) for normal damage.
44 Your blow sends your foe crashing back into another foe. Both foes -3 to next attack.
45 You drive your foe back. Foe may only defend next round, not attack.
46 Knock foe down! Foe has -3 penalty to next attack.

51 Foe loses use of special power for this combat. If no power, foe loses weapon (-3 SKILL).
52 Break your foe’s weapon! (If magic, it’s instead knocked away.) -3 to foe’s SKILL.
53 You seize foe’s weapon and may wield it if you wish. -3 to foe’s SKILL.
54 Crippling blow! Reduce foe’s SKILL by 2.
55 Foe is stunned! Your next attack automatically hits for +1 damage.
56 Foe catches fire! (Probably from a light source.) Foe takes fire damage.

61 Precision strike! Foe loses 1 SKILL.
62 Lucky strike! Regain 1 LUCK point.
63 Adrenaline surge! Regain 1d3 STAMINA.
64 You spot foe’s weakness. +2 SKILL vs. this foe until defeated.
65 Heroic resolve! Regain 1d3 STAMINA.
66 Mortal blow! You do double maximum damage.

Very nice to use against monsters, if I used it against my players they would never come back

Totally. For monsters, I would stick to double damage. Leave all the flashy cool stuff to the heroes.

Nice work. It looks good to me, but if you fine tune them further be great if you can update here.
