New Monster "Drachnoid"

Post by shintokamikaze » Thu Nov 03, 2016 10:59 pm

Here's a new monster I put together

Drachnoid

Skill:11
Stamina:18
Attacks:3
Weapon:Large Claw/Bite
Armour:Heavy
Damage Modifier:+1 Damage
Habitat:Caves,Mines
Number Encountered:1-2
Type:Monster
Reaction:Hostile
Intelligence:High

First encountered by the Dwarfs deep in the tunnels of
Fangtane, this silent killer has been the bane of many miners
and Adventurers who delve the deep, dark, forgotten places
of Titan, their limbs torn from their bodies as they lie
helpless in the blacktrap of the carnivorous Drachnoid.

viciously territorial, the Drachnoid will attack any creature
entering their hunting grounds. Drachnoids resemble Dragons,
but they are much smaller, about the size of a horse, their bodies
adapted over generations to the cramped confines of their underground
lairs, also losing the power of flight, they now use their bony fingered
wings to to secrete a sticky black substance that they manipulate into
traps to ensnare their quarry.

Drachnoids are covered in a tough dark grey skin that is bristled with
matted black hair that almost forms bony spikes on their head and back,
their mouth is lined with three lines of razor sharp teeth that they use
to rip and tear the flesh of their victims.

Drachnoids can move fast on their four muscular clawed legs, and can move up and down
cave walls like their giant spider cousins.

The tunnels of the Drachnoid are littered with pools of blacktrap, anyone stepping
into it will be stuck fast, and must pass a strength check to break free form this
sticky black substance.

I like it a lot, we need a few more of these higher end creatures for "boss monster" encounters that can still challenge a whole group once they get a bit of experience. I don't love the name for a reason I can't quite put my finger on. Might be it reminds me of droid, so it sounds sci-fi. But that's a small thing. It seems like it could be related to the Serpents in BtP, they're also sort of devolved/mutated dragons although hairyness is a new one.

Thank's it's nice to get some feed back, but you could call it Blacktrap Beast or spiderquad or Drachnid.
Another thing I came up with is that blacktrap is highly inflammable, and giving the monster or blacktrap some kind of paralytic power.
I will do some more work on it.

I like the monster and Drachnid works well as a name.
giant spider webs are extremely vulnerable to fire, in OotP they are noted as causing 2D6 damage to anyone in a web when it catches fire, so that could work well?

I was thinking that blacktrap it is a liquid, and the Dwarfs harvest and refine it after they clear any Drachnid nests they come across in their mines, it burns a lot longer and brighter than any other known lamp oil, also it has a paralytic effect on the nervous system when it is absorbed through the skin, something that only Dwarfs seem to be immune to.
I will flesh it out more over the weekend, adding more detail and history.

I also really liked your Idea!

Totally agreed!

Just an Idea: maybe every 3 rounds one hero facing the drachnid might get to test his or hers luck or dodge to avoid being trapped by a jet of the sticky substance. On a failed roll, he or she gets pinned down and some penalty to attack rolls. Does the drachnid have some kind of poison? Maybe it could act similar to this rules, or reducing skill, dont know.

Drachnid

Skill: Adult 11. Young 7.
Stamina: Adult 18. Young 10.
Attacks:3
Weapon:
Adult - Large Claw/Bite
Young - Medium Claw/Bite
Armour:Heavy
Damage Modifier:Adult +1 Damage
Habitat: Caves,Mines
Number Encountered:1-4
Type:Monster
Reaction:Hostile
Intelligence:High

First encountered by the Dwarfs deep in the mines of
Fangthane, this silent killer has been the bane of many miners
and Adventurers who delve the deep, dark, forgotten places
of Titan, their limbs torn from their bodies as they lie
helpless in the blacktrap of the carnivorous Drachnid, it is said
by Scholars in Salamonis that the Dwarfs have developed elaborate tactics for
hunting Drachind's, and they relish their mine safaris against the hidden nests of this
foul monster.

viciously territorial, the Drachnid will attack any creature
entering their hunting grounds. Drachnids resemble Dragons,
but thay are much smaller, about the size of a horse, their bodies
adapted over generations to the cramped confines of their underground
lairs, also losing the power of flight, they now use their boney fingerd
wings as arms to secrete a sticky black substance that they manipulate into
traps to ensnare their quarry.

Drachnids are coverd in a tough dark grey skin that is brisled with
matted black hair that almost forms boney spikes on their head and back,
their mouth is lined with three lines of razor sharp teeth that they use
to rip and tear the flesh of their victims.

Drachnids can move fast on their four clawed muscular legs, and can move up and down
cave walls like their giant spider cousins. The female's are larger than the males
and can lay upto 100 eggs after the mating season, it is very rare for more that one or two
of the brood to survive to adulthood, as the stronger young tend to devour their siblings.

The tunnels of the Drachnid are littered with pools of blacktrap, anyone stepping
into it will be stuck fast, and must pass a strength check to break free form this
sticky black substance, blacktrap has a very strong paralytic power any creature who's
skin is exposed to it must immediately take a luck test, on a failed test they
will after 1D3 combat rounds begin to enter a Coma like state, temporarily losing one skill point
every combat round, after Three points are lost they will be rendered unconscious for 2D6 hours,
only Dwarfs seem to be immune to this power.
Blacktrap is also highly inflammable anyone caught in a burning pool will take 2D6 damage,
this sticky black substance is highly coveted by Dwarfs, after they clear a Drachnid infestation
they harvest and refine it into an oil that burns much brighter and longer than any other known lamp oil.

Miner's black

This rare lamp oil burns longer and brighter that normal lamp oil.
Of course it has a price tag to match, some times costing up to 5 times
that of normal oil, when, or if it can be found.

Torch:
Burns 1 and a half hours
Illuminates 20 metres

Lamp:
Burns 6 hours per refill of oil
Illuminates 10 metres
