Size Categories and Definitions

In the rulebook for the spell Animate:
The spell will otherwise last for two minutes, although this may be extended by one minute for each additional magic point extended. A medium sized object may be animated with the expenditure of 2 additional magic points, a large object for an additional 4 and a very large object for 6 additional magic points.
Is there a quantification and definition of what these size classes are. Offhand I cannot recollect a passage in the rulebook outside of a mention of this in Encumbrance for some things like arrows, gems, etc.

Is this matter to be rather decided by referee fiat?

Well, I also can't remember a clear definition in either the new or the old edition. I define the size category pretty much by the attack type of the creature, as shown in the core book pages 123-128 (and also BtP).
