Using a shield as an offensive weapon

Post by Slloyd14 » Thu Dec 29, 2016 12:14 am

I have just finished reading the unofficial manual to being a gladiator and it talks about how you have to use a shield to hit people as well as a defensive weapon. This also takes place in the film Gladiator, especially when Maximus is fighting that retired guy. He really beats him round the head with his shield.

If a hero is fighting with a shield and has the Ambidextrous talent, instead of using a shield for defence, they can use them to attack for a separate attack.

A small shield could do damage as a dagger. A large shield could do damage as a shortsword.

Of course, if a hero uses a shield to hit someone with, they can't get the armour bonus that round.

I like the idea, it means people with Ambidextrous can switch between more protection or more attacks without swapping equipment. Maybe the damage should be a bit less? With that talent you usually have a dagger or shortsword as the second weapon and choosing to do that should perhaps do more damage than the shield option. Improvised weapon for small shield and dagger for large shield?

This is a bit of an aside, but I'd been wondering about a combat manoeuvre where you shelter behind a shield against missiles or if that was covered by the existing Fighting Defensively. Thinking that through it doesn't really make sense you even could fight defensively against missiles without a shield, although the description doesn't seem to prevent that.

Will use! Maybe they also have a chance to knock the enemy over? Maybe a 1 in 3 Chance every hit?

I think in a fight, you use anything you can think of and I am sure that using shields as weapons grew from that - I bet everyone did it, from Shield biting berserks through to Hoplites and anyone else in the right situation. This leads on to an image I have always had in my mind of the spear thrown through shield tactic to weigh the shield down and tread on it if possible too. Maybe controlling a shield like this was as much about you preventing your foe from hurting you with it ( and in general) as it was about them defending themselves.

How about less damage but with an optional push of some sort to unbalance a foe, this would be a way of evening the odds temporarily ( a bit at least) against larger numbers of foes where the damage result on a knock back equates instead to the numbers of rounds a foe is out of combat - recovering weapons or picking himself up off the floor (I would see this as either you opt for some damage or you try to push them over, not both). I think Legionnaire in a shield formation wold be less likely to lift his shield and try and slice someone with it then he would maybe to thrust against them and keep formation but push them over.

This could be replaced with Arrow Cutting in far eastern/Samurai style cultures where shields might not be so prevalent. thinking about it though, wouldn't Swashbuckler allow dodge against this if you didnt have a shield? If so fighting defensively could still be plausible without a shield against missile attacks perhaps.
