I know theres been a little discussion here about Morale, do any of you use it to make npc foes run from combat?

Also, one of my players wanted to try and bluff or invoke fear into foes during a combat, has anyone had any similar experiences? How do you handle it?

We had a recent case where a bunch of sewer goblins popped out of a manhole and rushed the party. The lead character drew her sword and with a single swipe, completely obliterated the first goblin. Everybody stopped and said, "Whoa!" So I decided it was time to roll for morale.

When someone does something, or something happens that makes people say "Whoa!" then I'll check morale. The rest of the time, combat occurs normally, usually to the death.

I haven't had someone try to force a morale check yet, but I'd require an overwhelming display of force. Some kind of magical display or huge surprise to the bad guys.

By the way, the rest of those sewer goblins took off like a shot. :)

I only use moral when someone does something special, otherwise it's suicidal fury :P

Well you guys have summed up what I felt was the way to go.

When the player asked, I didn't have access to the Companion so I didn't even know about Morale at that point but I knew about certain spell effects. Either way I told him sorry, its a fight to the death. :lol:

Morale is just a SKILL test for the bad guys. With a few modifiers. :)
