Damage die cap

Post by FarsightBlogger » Fri Feb 23, 2018 5:02 pm

I'm designing a roleplaying game of my own and I'm thinking of using an idea I've had for that game for Fighting Fantasy.

Instead of a weapon chart that generates a random number from a D6, I was thinking of a die cap, a number that determines the highest number a D6 can roll.

So, a die cap of 4 on a weapon means that a roll of 1-4 is that number, but anything over a four is remains a 4. It'd speed up combat and remove the need for chart checking, and although the score for heavier weapons will be much more random it'd add a sense of more exciting chance to the proceedings.

Something which you could do for the large weapons is to put a minimum so that a Battle Axe always scores a minimum of 2 for example.
