How much information do you give about enemies?

Post by Slloyd14 » Sun Aug 31, 2014 10:33 am

Hi all!

Just wondering how much information you think you should give to players/have as a player about enemies i an encounter?

Should they know their skill, stamina, number of attacks, weapons, armour, special abilities?

Should they be given numbers or just a description to go on (he wields his sword with speed and looks like he knows how to use it)

Many thanks!

I tend to go with the latter. Players tend to work the details out before long anyway, but it is good to have a bit of mystery to begin with!

I only describe what the character perceives.

For combat, I prefer to let the players interpretation of dice results determine information.
I had a battle where the player's character was battling an NPC who only had 1 skill point difference between the two of them. Due to bad rolls the player was getting beaten. I only admitted that they only had 1 skill point difference because the player was getting frustrated.

I don't mind telling the player his opponents height, appearance and weapons but I let the combat results speak for how fast or agile his opponent is. It's a "Better to show then tell" thing for me.

Anytime there is a crit, I usually go into detail though.

On a face to face game, I prefer sticking with descriptions only.
This could change depending on players' preferences and types of game.
