Lore skills

Hi all! I was just thinking of any extra lore skills the heroes might find useful, or at least useful enough that they might need an NPC who has the skill to answer a question. At the moment, I've come up with 2:

History Lore
This skill bestows its owner with knowledge of the names of famous people and events in the past as well as greater knowledge of what actually happened if it differs to the common stories.

Plant Lore
This allows the hero to identify which plants are beneficial and which are baneful. It also allows them to take good care of plants to help them grow. Very useful for farmers.

Celestial Lore
This skill allows knowledge of the heavens of Titan and its constelations could be used to understand portents or augaries of comets, shooting stars and other events. possibly combined with navigation skill for a synergy bonus ? :idea:

I haven't thought of that one and it could offer a synergy bonus to navigation and also skills and spells that involve seeing into the future.

Lost Writing Lore might be good even if the name could do with work. Let's say they come across an inscription on an ancient tomb, or writing on a scroll in a language no longer spoken, it would give them a chance to decipher the basic meaning.

Wouldn't natural linguist or ancient assalanian cover that?

Guess it depends how you read those. Natural Linguist says something about understanding even if you've only heard it a little, so I take that it's only spoken language and not writing. Plus it's a talent so a bit different. Languages - Ancient Allansian I figure is a single language that used to be common on Allansia, it doesn't cover all the lost and ancient languages. But sure you could interpret them differently.

May be a boring name but how about ancient lore (written) I suppose it could even be a sub skill similar to D&D 3.5 Bardic Lore . Don't know if this helps?

I've got another one that (I think) hasn't been suggested before, Weather Lore. You can observe the sky, wind, humidity, feel the air pressure and so on, to predict what the weather's going to do next. Wouldn't come in useful that often for an adventurer but seems like something a ship's captain or a priest of Sukh (god of storms) might be interested in.

Paleography, and/or Epigraphy. :lol:
Linguist Sp. Sk. can be for currently-spoken languages, while Paleographer or Epigrapher could be reserved for dead, written languages, or older, obscure stages of currently-spoken languages.

I'm not comfortable with making the skill system in AFF2e all that complicated. I think the draw of this game is its sleek, streamlined rules. I'd just call it Language (Ancient) Lore, as opposed to Language (modern) Lore. I guess one could get a little more exacting with Language (Ancient, Allansian) Lore.

The same goes for the broad weapon skill categories: axes, swords, polearms, etc. I don't look forward to the day one of my players wants a weapon specialisation in Glaive-Guisarme or Bohemian Earspoon. :shock: There's always D&D for the very rules-heavy systems.
