Blacksand 2e Comments & Questions

Post by JoeDuncan » Fri Mar 09, 2018 2:55 am

Hey,

I just recently bought all the 2e books (and pulled my 1e ones out of storage) and I wanted to make a few quick comments about 2e Blacksand.

Overall I was pleased, I really like the naval stuff and town generation, and that the description of the city filled in some entries that were only named in 1e (Osric's Arms, for example).

I'm a bit disappointed with the maps though, they are not as good as 1e :(

I was saddened by the removal of detail, and perplexed by some rearrangements.

The removal of the shadows on the buildings makes it impossible to tell the difference between the courtyards and second stories anymore, and the removal of all the stair wells takes away a lot of the 3D "feel" (how do you know where the hills are?) - together they just make the maps look too flat :(

Also, I'm a bit at a loss as to figure out why all the warehouses were changed?; it seems a lot of unnecessary work to go through for what's essentially a lateral modification...

Anyways, it's not going to stop me from buying EVERYTHING else AFF2e that gets published :D (so happy it's back!) but I just wanted to give my feedback and query what other people thought.

Some good observations.

One thing I noted to Graham which was an improvement was the decision to remove the map of the sewers in the inset of the original map, for two reasons:

1.) I can hand this map to new players without revealig to them the fact that there is a sprawling network of sewers and tunnels beneath the city, or suggesting this is important.

2.) They made no sense and were pretty random and needlessly basic. Basically limited the possibility of getting lost or having difficulty navigating when there
were hardly more than 5 or 6 places the tunnels forked on either side of the river. It would seem a miracle that things like the Temple of Hydana wouldn’t be found by half the people who went into the sewers. (Though there is a discrepancy between the sewers as depicted on the original map and the maze in the original Dungeoneer! rulebook).

3.) I love Blacksand so much that I’ve imported it into every D&D game I’ve ever run. It’s literally a perfect resource for any other game. Strange and unique encounters and monsters, a fully fleshed out history and a DM can absolutely bring players into a reality that they know backwards and forwards, and are so immersed in. It’s a perfect place for adventure hooks—procuring an exotic item, gathering information, introducing new PCs to the party, hiring a specialist, etc, as well as for city adventuring itself. The sewers present an incredible opportunity to dungeon crawl inside a city which could be anywhere, in any kind of game genre from medieval to arabian settings.

The map of the sewers already kind of commits us to the idea that the ruins are well mapped and limited to the branches as presented in the inset. It was a wise decision to yank them.

Just a note on the ruins of Carsapolis. Blacksand is built on the old docks of Carsapolis and in fact only the south side of the town is built on the ruins, the north side is actually new. If you look at the map of the siege of Carsapolis in Titan then you see that it extended to the south and east of Blacksand and was bordered to the north by the Catfish river.

This means that you have the whole south /south east of blacksand which are covered in ruins. Not as a continuous set of ruins but you would certainly have some strange and enigmatic buildings sticking up here and there as well as remains of the two sets of walls

Epic!
He just sits there tapping away all day on a tiny screen. But he tells everyone that he is slaying Orcs.

Black sand isn’t on the old docks of Carsapolis
Sorry, obvious mistake there... Blacksand IS built on the old docks of Carsapolis. The fisherman’s market and south docks in particular.

Have corrected the original
