Troika!

Post by Jakob » Thu Jan 09, 2020 9:34 am

Is it okay to discuss other FF-based rpgs in this forum? The only other one I know of is actually Daniel Sell's Troika!, a game that turns the gonzo elements found in some FF books up to 11. Golden Sky Barges, Thinking Engines that use Flatirons do regenerate Stamina, all kinds of weird cults and decadence ... there's no real setting description, but a science-fantasy setting that is strongly implied by the description of the character types and spells.
I'm going to run a one-shot with it tonight (the first official chapbook scenario, "Fronds of Benevolence", about a plant-creature Duke who needs some help to get the rare earths he feeds on), and I'll be using a mix of the Troika! rules (which are very much like a stripped down AFF would look like, but with a different initiative system and higher damage ratings) and elements from AFF. The beauty of it is that it really seems trivially easy to port elements between the two games - in terms of stats, you'd virtually have to change nothing to play the Troika! material with AFF rules, and vice versa.

Yes, but I've moved it to the Misc forum as it's not directly AFF based.

Thanks! I'll write some more about it after the one-shot tonight.

Played it yesterday - it ended up feeling like a cross between Planescape and an episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, with a group of seniour tourists along for the ride on the golden barge who were all so excited about their little trip turning into a "real adventure" with actual dead people!
"Fronds of Benevolence" is a great little pointcrawl scenario with enough zany places, NPCs and creatures to keep you going for five or six gaming nights (we ended up just using three of about a dozen potential encounters). It has some weaknesses - there could be a little more connecting-the-dots, not in terms of railroading, but pointing out elements in one place that are relevant to elements in another place. I had to puzzle out a lot about how it all fits together myself. Also, the pointcrawl map is hard to make sense of and seems to be lacking a lot of possible connections and travel times (and since time is a big issue in the scenario, this is a rather big oversight).
Regarding the rules: Troika works just finde. Its basic AFF, but armor reduces your damage roll by 1-3 and spells are cast with skill rolls and come with a stamina cost. You roll SSL, and then you roll a background with d66 which gives you a fixed set of skills, equipment and a usually very evocative text.

I'd definitely recommend getting both troika! and the scenario in pdf if you're into OSR science fantasy gonzo stuff and play AFF.

Such a weird cover. Not my taste at all. Does the internal art match the cover?

Yes, it tends to be even further on the weird side. If you don't like the cover, you probably won't like the interior art. I only just now noticed that I neglected to write anything about the art in the book ...

And a Background I wrote for Troika!:

Backgrounds in Troika! are very much what a race-class is in D&D games - they give you everything apart from your core stats.

Another game that just got published is Warlock! which is a mash-up of Fighting Fantasy and Warhammer FRP 1e:
